What is Somatic Symptom?
Somatic symptom disorder is characterized by a focus on somatic (physical) symptoms, such as pain or fatigue, to the point of excessive concern, preoccupation, and fear. Patients’ suffering is authentic, and they typically experience a high level of functional impairment.

Somatic Symptom Disorder explained
Focus on physical (somatic) symptoms to the point of excessive concern,
preoccupation and fear. (Ex: Pain, Fatigue, Chest Pain, swelling, back
pain, Shortness of breath, insomnia, abdominal pain)
- High level of functional impairment
- High levels of help seeking, but rarely alleviates the concerns.
- Unable to make a clear diagnosis explaining symptoms – No evidence to
cause of symptoms - Patient may become frustrated

Patient presents with neurological symptoms in the absence of a
neurological diagnosis (cause)
- Deficits in voluntary motor or sensory function – paralysis, blindness, movement disorder, gait disorder, numbness,
paresthesia, loss of vision or hearing - Emotional conflicts or stressors are transferred to physical symptoms.
- Many patient’s show a lack of emotional concern (labelle indifference)
- Always must rule out physical causes

Therapeutic relationship is extremely important – Be empathetic
- Encourage the patient to express their feelings and emotions.
- Aide the patient in making connections between their physical symptoms
and the emotional symptoms they are experiencing - Teaching:
- Effective coping skills – relaxation techniques, assertiveness training, cognitive reframing
- Unclear the effectiveness of medications. Some benefits to short-term
Benzo use. Some SNRIs have been utilized with positive outcomes, but
more research is needed
