Why did the freed African American community opposed the ACS?
- Colonization was believed to be a pro-slavery conspiracy
- Blacks homeland is America, from the many generations that spent their lifetimes as slaves
- Colonization hinders the progress anti-slavery, because it legitimized racism.
- African Americans believed that the ACS just wants to send them off to Africa to not deal with them
Although William Lloyd Garrison was previously a member of the ACS, why did he later denounce it?
- Prior slaveholders started to denounce colonization for purely pro slavery purposes. The society faced economic difficulties, and internal divisions weakened it, which led them into debt.
- Harming efforts for abolition
- Ships take a while, lots of holdbacks to colonization → Might as well be in the institution
Why is it important to note that Lincoln’s first impulse, as explained in 1854, was to “free all the slaves and send them to Liberia—to their own native land?”
