Unit 6 - Clinical Periodontal Assessment - The Comprehensive Assessment Flashcards
What is the comprehensive periodontal assessment?
An intensive clinical periodontal assessment used to gather information about the periodontium
What is the collection of baseline data?
Clinical information gathered from this periodontal assessment aids to identify the periodontal health status of the client, prior to periodontal therapy
What data is collected at subsequent appointments?
Data is used as a comparasion to determine improvements, stability or deline of the periodontal health over a period of time
What is a Class I mobility?
Up to 1mm of horiztonal displacement in a facial-lingual direction
What is a Class II mobility?
Greater than 1mm but less than 2mm of horizontal displacemen in a facial-lingual direction
What is a Class III mobility?
Greater than 2mm displacement in a facial-lingual direction or bouncing in the socket
What is it called when there is a palpable or visible movement of a tooth when in function?
Fremitus
How can a femitus be assessed?
By gently placing a gloved index finger against the facial aspect of the tooth as the patient either taps the teeth together or stimulates chewing movements
What does furcation involvement typically signify?
The need for periodontal surgery
What is Class I fucation involvement?
Curvature of cancavity can be felt with the probe tip; the probe penetrates no more than 1mm
What is a Class II furcation involvement?
The probe tip penetrates into the furcation greater than 1mm but does not pass through.
What is Class III fucation?
The probe passes completely through the furcation
What is Class IV fucation involvment?
Same as class III except entrance to the furcation is clinically visible because of recession of the gingival margin
What is the lamina dura?
Thin layer of dense bone that lines a normal tooth socket that appears as a continuous white line around the tooth root
What does a widening of PDL space on a radiograph indicate?
Tooth mobility
