Phrasal verbs
- =verbs + particle ( preposition or adverb)
- an adverb modifies an action. It gives extra information about time, place , manner , frequency…

-with some phrasal verbs , the particle and verbs cannot be separated

-with phrasal verb , it is not always possible to work out the meaning by looking at its parts
Go in= enter
Go for= choose
Look up to= admire
- there are many phrasal verbs in English and they are most frequently used in spoken English and in more informal writing
- there is often a single word with the same meaning which is preferred in more formal writing
The football match has been put off until next weekend
The football match has been postponed until next week
The price of petrol has gone up three time last years ( increase)
- many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning, and more than one form
He asked to stop singing as it was putting him off= distract
The football match has been put off until next week end = postpone
Don’t be put off if you can’t do it straight away= disappointed
Different form:
- some can have their object before or after the particle
- if the object is a pronoun, it must go between the two parts of the verb
We did our bathroom up last year
We did up our bathroom last year
We did it up by ourselves
Not: we did up it by ourselves
