Unit 5 - Concentration Flashcards
Whats the equation for Concentration?
Concentration (M) = Moles (mols) / Volume (L)
What is dm^3 equal to?
Liters
What is cm^3 equal to?
Milliliters
What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture consisting of a solute (substance being dissolved) and a solvent.
What is concentration?
Relative amount of solution. (varies with temperature.)
Whats the most common way to indicate concentration?
Molarity (M)
What is Molarity?
(M) Determined by the moles of solute per volume in Liters of a solution.
How do you convert mL to L?
Divide by 1000. (or move decimal place 3 digits to the left)
What is the solubility curves X and Y axis?
x=temperature
y=grams of solute/ grams of solution
What equation do you use if you have an unknown concentration or volume?
M2V2=M1V1
What is the equation for molality?
Molality (m) = moles of solute / kg of solvent
What does molality tell us?
The concentration of a solution expressed in the number of moles of solute per 1kg of solution.
Why might you use molality?
Unlike Molarity it doesn’t vary with temperature.
What are percent solutions?
The concentration of solutions
1. Ratio of volume of solute to volume of solution
2. Ratio of mass of solute to mass of solution
