UNIT 5: Chapter Twelve - 5.5, Pgs. 296-302 Flashcards
Third Agricultural Revolution
Born out of science, research, and technology. Continues today.
Green Revolution
The advances in plant biology of the mid-20th century.
Impact of Norman Borlaug
Laid the foundation for scientifically increasing the food supply to meet the demands of an ever-increasing global population.
Hybridization
The process of breeding two plants that have desirable characteristics to produce a single seed with both characteristics.
Machinery’s impact on Green Revolution
Assisted in production and challenged traditional labor-intensive farming practices that had been in place for thousands of years.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
A process by which humans use engineering techniques to change the DNA of a seed.
Positive impacts of the Green Revolution
Higher Yields, Money for Research and Business, and Food Prices.
Negative impacts of the Green Revolution
Environmental Damages, Gender Inequalities, Economic Obstacles, Failures in Africa.
Green Revolution impact on gender roles
Often men were the ones to benefit from the Green Revolution and its technologies. They were the ones who were given the power to make decisions. Women were often excluded from these opportunities. Marginalized women even more and limited their role in society.
Why didn’t GR help Africa?
Greater diversity of climate and soils, harsh environmental conditions, lacks a well-developed transportation infrastructure, and Africa’s staple crops weren’t always included in seed-hybridization.
