Clustered (nucleated) Settlement
These settlements had groups of homes located near each other (often around a central point) in a village and fostered a strong sense of place and often shared services, such as schools.
Dispersed Settlements
Patterns in which farmers lived in homes spread throughout the countryside.
Linear Settlements
Settlements in which buildings and human activities are organized close to a body of water or along a transportation route.
Metes and Bounds
Used to describe plot boundaries using natural landmarks.
Public Land Survey (Township and Range) System
Divides property for sale and settling, and creates rectangular plots of consistent size.
French Long-lot System.
Made so many farmers could have some river frontage. Emphasized the value of access to a river for water and trade.
