Unit 5 biology Lipids Flashcards
Describe the solubility of lipids
Insoluble in water
soluble in organic solvents (solvents)
What are the most common types of lipids?
Triglycerides
How are Triglycerides formed?
Formed by one glycerol and three fatty acids by condensation
How can they be broken down?
Hydrolysis
What are triglycerides called at room temperature?
Fats(from animals)
What are triglycerides called when liquids?
Oil (mainly from plants, fatty meats, seeds, nuts, milk, and dairy products)
What is the function of lipids?
Energy reserves
Where are lipids stored in our body?
In adipose tissues as energy reserves
Where is adipose tissues found?
Under the skin as subcutaneous fat or around the internal organs.
(can be broken down to provide energy)
What is the second function of lipids?
As a shock absorber
How do lipids absorb shock?
Fat stored in adipose tissues around the internal organs acts as a shock absorber to protect the internal organs
What is the third function of lipids?
As a heat insulator
How do lipids act as heat insulators?
Subcutaneous fat acts as such to reduce heat loss from the body
What is the fourth function of lipids?
Involved in the absorption, transport and storage of lipid-soluble vitamins (A/D)
What is the fifth function of lipids?
To produce some hormones (sex hormones)
What is the sixth function of lipids?
As a component of cell membranes
(Phospholipids are the major component of cell membranes)
How to test for lipids?
The grease spot test
If the translucent spot that appears on the filter paper disappears after being immersed into an organic solvent then lipids are present
