Q

What is a scientific truth

A

Scientists believe that their truths are correct as they have tested them will experiments so they are considered to be proved true. Within science truths are widely accepted and develop according to scientific advances

Q

What is a historical truth

A

Historians believe they must have evidence to prove their truths. Their evidence comes from documents and eye witnesses but unlike scientists historians can disagree on truths because of different interpretations of the truths

Q

What is a religious truth

A

Religions need evidence but in the form of holy texts or scriptures. They make conclusions from holy books but the truth can be disagreed with depending on the religions and the interpretation

Q

Absolute truth

A

A truth that can’t be changed and is considered to be completely true. It has evidence facts and proofs that can’t be adapted so it is correct. Eg a square has four sides. But an absolute truth can vary depending on the group like evolution is true with scientists but God created everything

Q

Evolving truth

A

A truth that depends on thoughts and evidence available at he time. It is capable of changing depending on the time that believes it and evidence. Eg cosmological revolution - once said sun went round the earth but evidence proved them wrong

16
Q

Islamic view on creation of the earth

A

Believe Allah created the universe and Adam and Eve (taught in Qur’an). They don’t reject science but use it to support their argument

17
Q

Buddhists view on creation of the earth

A

They don’t believe in God so they have no problem accepting the Big Bang theory as it isn’t disproving the existence of a higher figure

18
Q

What is the cosmological revolution

A

Debate regarding structure of the universe. In Middle Ages it was believed earth was centre of the universe because God made the earth so it’s the most important but science proved earth went round sun so god did not intend humanity to be the most important. Science free to challenge religion. Science had answers religion used to fill in gaps. God became unnecessary to run the universe

19
Q

Nicholas Copernicus

A

Observed the sun was centre of universe with moon revolving around the earth

20
Q

Galilei galilieo

A

Proved the universe was continually changing so it couldn’t have been created by God

21
Q

Genesis account for origin of life

A

Life created by God, humanity the last to be created in image of God

22
Q

The theory of evolution

A

Argues humanity evolved from primitive beings such as apes

23
Q

Charles Darwin

A

In every species those not strong enough won’t survive and those who do survive adapt themselves to survive. Less and less of the species will die as more adapted to survive. Natural selections.

24
Q

Argument saying Darwin needed God?

A

Needed God to kick start the universe to start evolution

25
Q

What is an issue of evolution

A

Is if we don’t have a higher being who is aware of our actions then there could be no life after death. And that means that it is also plausible that moral behaviour is not necessary if they can’t get into heaven, reach enlightenment ect.

26
Q

Did Darwin set out to disprove God

A

Darwin was Christian and used his theory to prove God but has since been used to disprove existence of God by many

27
Q

Issue for genesis about Darwin

A

Proved its not possible for humanity to be created on sixth day because they have evolved. If God is designer he should have created everything but can’t create an unpredictable process

28
Q

Why do some religions reject Darwin

A
  • creationism says God created earth of sixth day
  • Darwin disproved it
  • if humans evolved from animals do animals also have souls and where do they go when they die
  • fossil evidence is inconclusive
29
Q

Why does some Religion accepts Darwin

A
  • evolution needs God in order to be true
  • God created universe but allowed his creation to delvop by itself
  • God is omniscient and knows the final outcome of his creations
30
Q

What is the theory of the “God of the gaps”

A

Where religion fills the gaps that science cant not answer

31
Q

Why does society favour science

A

Modern society is consistently asking for answers and sconce had proof and evidence supporting their answers

32
Q

Why does the modern world need both science and relgion

A

Both can be true in their own right and they provide answers for different people depending on beliefs

33
Q

What cant science and relgion agree?

A

Both sides believe their truth is correct and they can prove it is correct. Relgious believers could argue you can’t combine both truths as they are incompatible and some religious teachings and beliefs could end up being discarded

34
Q

Why can science and relgion agree

A

Depending on interpretation, both could agree with each other. If we don’t take bible literally then creation didn’t happen in six days but over a longer period of time (the gap theory). In Buddhist, Muslims, Hindus science doesn’t oppose religion. Especially in Muslims as science can prove Allah is the creator

35
Q

What is the theory of intelligent design

A

Allows for intelligent in the creation or cause of universe but doesn’t say it’s by God. It allows relgion and sconce to co exist as it doesn’t say God created the universe or describe the Big Bang and evolution as random processes

36
Q

What is evidence?

A

A fact that can indicate whether something is true
