What is corruption?
Dishonestly that usually leads to the accumulation of wealth
Climate?
The regular weather conditions of the area
World trade?
Different countries buying and selling goods from each other
Global independence?
Where different countries in the world reply on each other for trade and survival
What can’t the poor afford?
To feet themselves, heat their homes and no educations
What is the BRANDT line
The northern hemisphere and the poorer Southern Hemisphere
Why does where you live affect whether you are rich or poor?
Because of the weather - hot and dry climates can lead to poverty as it is hard to grow food or keep animals
Countries in areas where natural disasters occur - destroys homes and businesses
Natural resources - if there is loads of oil reserves where you live you are more likely to be richer (Sudan and Saudia Arabia - Saudia Arabia has lots of oil so richer)
Why does poverty affect life expectancy?
More likely to die young from malnutrition or disease
Why does politics and corruption make you poor?
It makes the country unstable and, if there s a civil war, money will be put into winning that. Political instability stops countries from working their way out of poverty.
Why does climate affect poverty?
Desertification which is a problems in many countries like Africa as 92% of the continent doesn’t receive enough rain to grow reliable crops
Why does population growth cause poverty?
Number of people is growing at an exponential rate = more mouths to feed but no food to do it
Economic reasons for poverty?
Can’t afford to buy essential crops like wheat so they are forced to grow cash crops such as tobacco
Buddhism on world poverty
Their morality follows the noble eightfold path which says you should earn a “right livelihood” (having an honest job. And using your wealth well) like buying fairtrade good or giving to charity
Hinduism on world poverty
They have the idea of dharma (duty) each Varna has a specific duty and the highest (like priests) don’t aim to earn any money. They aim to be a sannyasin which relies on the charity of others so Hindus think charity is important
Judaism on world poverty
Believe all wealth comes from God so nothing belongs to us anyway. All wealth should be shared. Any Jew is welcome to live in Israel to escape poverty.
Christianity on world poverty
The Old Testament. “Love your neighbour as yourself” - they should treat everyone well as thy would like to be treated. “No man can have two masters… you can’t serve both money and God” - Jesus
Justice?
What is right and fair according to the law, or making up for that done wrong
Stewardship?
Idea that r livers had a duty to look after the environment on behalf of God
Compassion?
A feeling of pity that makes one want to helo
Religious ideas on stewardship
Jews Christians and Muslims all share the idea God created the world in the Adam and Eve story and Adam and Eve were to act as stewards
Religious ideas on compassion?
Buddhism centres on compassion - idea of enlightenment and selflessness. Selfishness and greed are two of the poisons that cause world poverty
Christians centre around love your neighbour - compassion is key eg Jesus gave his life for others
What does voluntary service do?
Doing charity work like working in a charity shop, collecting money, or flying out to an LEDC to help without being paid
Christian charity?
Christian Aid
Emergency aid - give food shelter and water after natural disasters
Long term aid- teaching people skills to improve their live eg education
Education - work their way out of poverty
Fund raising - it all costs money so they raise money for it through charitable givings
What is an Islamic charity?
Islamic relief
Based around same core values as Christian aid
Get zakat to help fund
What is Zakat
2.5% of savings give by Muslims to charities by Muslims
What is a civil war
A war fought against a country’s government by people within that country
What must something have to be fairtrade
- pay workers a living wage
- minimum price is established
- fairtrade cooperatives can negotiate better deals
- producers are paid a premium price on top of the cost of the goods
Emergency aid?
Immediate Assistance to deal with the aftermath of a disaster
Sustainable development?
People are helped to develop their skills and learn news ones which they can use again
Long term aid?
Assistance given to a poor country, possibly over a long period of time, that has lasting effect
Absolute poverty?
When people lack basic things needed to survive such as good
Relative poverty?
When people are poor compared to the other people in their society
How does famine cause povert?
Country is left without food or water
