Unit 4 Neuro PP Flashcards
What are upper motor neurons?
Efferent pathways primarily relaying information from the cerebrum to the brain stem or spinal cord. Synapse with interneurons.
What are lower motor neurons?
Neurons having direct influence on muscles
Cell bodies originate in the gray matter of the spinal cord, but their axons extend into the PNS
What is the lateral corticospinal track involved in?
gross motor movement
What is the extrapyramidal pathway?
pathway by which motor signals are sent from the brain to lower motor neurons
At what level does the motor signal cross over in the corticospinal tract?
At the level of medulla
What purpose does the anterior and lateral spinothalmic tract serve and how?
To transmit pain and temperature. Sensory neuron impulse enters p. cord, is transmitted across an interneuron and crosses to lat spinothalmic tract
Describe the role of the posterior dorsal columns
Transmits light touch and propioception (position of body relative to space). ascends posterior tract on same side, crosses at level of medulla
light coma
some purposeful movement upon stimulation
coma
no purposeful movement, even with stimulus
deep coma
completely unresponsive
