Unit 4: Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards
Asexual reproduction; one cell → 2 daughter cells
Mitosis
Sexual reproduction; one cell → 4 gamete cells
Meiosis
Process before meiosis and mitosis where DNA is copied
DNA Replication
Part of the cell cycle that includes growth and DNA copying
Interphase
DNA condenses, nucleus disappears, centriole makes spindle fibers to assist in moving things.
Prophase
Condensed DNA (chromosomes) are lined up in the middle of the cell by spindles.
Metaphase
X-shaped chromosomes (each side is a clone) are split to both ends of the cell.
Anaphase
Nucleus comes back, DNA starts to de-condense.
Telophase
Cell splits
Cytokinesis
The idea that during crossing over the genes you inherit are more or less randomized.
Independent Assortment
Part of meiosis where your mom DNA and dad DNA shuffle traits to make unique gametes.
Crossing Over
Sex cells. Sperm and egg!
Gametes
Cell with two sets of chromosomes (one from mom, one from dad)
Diploid Cell
Cell with one set of chromosomes (mom+dad genes randomized)
Haploid Cell
Disorder where chromosomes don’t split properly, leading to incorrect numbers of chromosomes.
Nondisjunction
