Unit 1: Organic Molecules and Homeostasis Flashcards
Sugars including starches, glucose, and starch.
Carbohydrate
Includes fats, oils, and waxes
Lipids
Incudes DNA and RNA
Nucleic Acids
Cellular “tools” that get work done.
Proteins
Protein that breaks down a “substrate”, puts together chemicals, or speeds up reactions by lowering the needed energy
Enzyme
Stored sugar in humans
Glycogen
Stored sugar in plants
Starch
Tough plant fiber that is “technically” a sugar but only some animals can digest it
Cellulose
Fat chemical that forms layers that make up the cell membrane. Outside is hydrophilic (likes water), inside is hydrophobic (hates water)
Phospholipids
Movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration
Diffusion
Flow of water from areas of high concentration across a cell membrane
Osmosis
Natural flow of molecules or other stuff from high concentration to low concentration. Yes, these definitions are very similar!
Concentration Gradient
Water in and Water Out are equal
Isotonic
More water out than in
Hypertonic
More water in than out
Hypotonic
