What is internal quality control?
Quality checks which are made before, during and after the manufacture of products in a manufacturing facility
How do they carry out internal quality control?
Trained workers check the products fall within pre-defined tollerances
What are examples of types of quality control checks?
Inside diameter of a tube could be measured using digital vernier callipers or a go/no go gague
What is quality assurance?
Quality assurance is about the management and application of quality control checks and procedures
What are examples of quality assurance checks?
Ensuring that machines work properly or that sharp cutting tools are installed
Who certifies quality assurance?
British standards institute (BSI) or international organisation for standardisation (ISO)
What evidence is there of quality assurance on products
They will have a BSI / ISO mark
What is Six Sigma?
A set of techniques and quality control tools for process improvement

How does 6 Sigma work?
It identifies and eliminates the cause of defects, reducing variability in manufacturing processes

What does ISO stand for?

An independent, non-governmental organisation with membership 167 of national standards bodies
Which standards apply to quality management?
ISO 9000 series of standards
What does ISO aim to do?
Improve product quality, efficiency of manufacturing process moral and ethical standards relating to product manufacturer. ISO or BSI is also a powerful marketing tool
What are some examples of BSI tests?
3 pin plug – the earth pin must be the longest and the live and neutral pins must have plastic guards. The wiring must be the correct colour

What is total quality management (TQM)?
An approach where responsibility is adopted by everyone in the organisation
Why is TQM important?
It aims to ensure that the customer receives goods in intended quality through continued review of internal processes
Why are flow charts useful?
They can include feedback loops that help identify quality control steps. They breakdown complex sequences into manageable steps
What are drawbacks of flow charts?
They do not show time frames or labour division
