Industrial practice Flashcards

1
Q

What is mass production?

A

Hundreds of identical products are made on a production line
Could be the assembly of many parts e.g cars
Robots can be used in the manufacturing process

Q

What is continuous production?

A

Manufacturing is usually 24 hours a day and 7 days a week
Maximises productivity
Only large quantites of identcal products like cans or steel
Highly automated with little to no human involvement

Q

What is batch production?

A

Product is made in specific batches of a specific quantities
Large products like planes are in small batches
Small products like baked beans in large batches
Clothing or seasonal products would also suit this production

7
Q

Advantages of batch production?

A

A good method to trial products or products with volatile sales numbers
Design can be changed between batches to suit demands

Q

Disadvantages of batch production?

A

Company needs to be flexible to different types of batch
Initialy expensive to set up production line with jigs ect..
Products are more expensive to buy

9
Q

What is unit or one-off production?

A

Where products are made on at a time
Products can all be different so it is very labour intensive
Combination of hand, machine and automated processes
Products include custom furniture, ships or bridges

Q

Advantages of one-off production?

A

Products can be unique
Products could be made to exact measurements and standards or a coustomer breif

Q

Disadvantages of one-off production?

A

High skilled workers are required
Induvidual design makes products more expensive
Company needs to be flexible to adapt to clients needs
Very expensive labour costs

15
Q

Advantages of cell production?

A

The quality of the products can be higher because the cell feels responsible and can see problems better
Work is much less repetitive
Better job satisfaction as they see the product

16
Q

Disadvantages of cell production?

A

The setup cost can be higher as a full set of tools are needed for each cell

17
Q

What is JIT manufacturing?

A

Developed in 60s and 70s by Toyota
Only by enough stock for immediate use

18
Q

Advantages of JIT manufacturing?

A

No need for large warehouses so floor space can be uses for more manufacturing
Capital is not tied up
Incremental changes can be made day to day

19
Q

Disadvantages of JIT manufacturing?

A

Precise planning and timing is needed
Production is relying on there being no delays in the supply of products

20
Q

What are standardised components?

A

Standardised components are components which can be bought to a set specification such as a diameter or length

21
Q

Advantages of standardised components?

A

The company can save manufacturing time
More time can be invested into actual product
Money can be saved not having to manufacture the component

22
Q

Disadvantages of standardised components?

A

Quality cannot be guaranteed
Dependant on other companies for delivery
