Something that you create using your mind- for example, a story, an invention, an artistic work or a symbol
What does copyright cover?

What does a registered trademark do?
Protects a brand for example, the name of a product or service

What is a design right?
An automatic right for three-dimensional objects. Applies to unregistered designs. The shape and configuration are automatically protected
How long does design right last for?
10 years after it was first sold or 15 years after it was created
How long is the appearance of a product protected for in the UK?
Three years from the date you make your design public

How do you get a patent?
You must apply
How long does a patent last for?
It must be renewed every year for a maximum of 20 years
In which countries is a patent valid?
They are not international so designers must patent their work in each country
What are the criteria for a patent?
It must not have been publicly available anywhere in the world before
It must not be a clear change to something that already exists
It must be made and used, a technical process, or a method for doing something
What can you not patent?
Dramatic, literary, musical or artistic works
A way of doing business, playing a game or thinking
A method of medical treatment or diagnosis
A scientific theory, mathematical method or discovery
The way in which information is presented
