Unit 6-C Flashcards
How do you identify the risks of a product to a consumer?
Evaluate how consumers will interact with the product
including possible misuse or accidental exposure
What are different types of hazards a product could give?
Mechanical hazards (sharp edges, pinch points)
Electrical hazards (shock risk)
Chemical hazards (toxicity, allergens)
Environmental hazards (exposure to heat, moisture)
What is FMEA?
A systematic process where potential failure modes are identified, and their causes and effects are analysed.
How do you use the demographics impact risk?
Children, elderly or disabled are more susceptible to risks based on product use.
How does a risk assessment matrix quantify risk?
It compares likelihood to severity of potential impacts on the user.
How can risks be reduced through design modifications?
Inherent safety design e.g. removing sharp edges
Redundancy and fail safes
Adding protective features like guards, insulation, or child resistant mechanisms
What else can be included with products to reduce risks?
Appropriate safety labels, warnings, and instructions to alert users of potential hazards
Instructions for proper use, maintenance and disposal
How can risk assessment be done throughout the product life cycle?
Regular testing and feedback including incident reports
Post market surveillance
What is a hazard?
The possibility of something causing harm
What is a risk?
Probability of harm occouring
