Unit 1 - Qualative and quantative testing Flashcards
What is quantatative testing
Involves numbers, measurements and quantities. you can then used numerical values to draw conclusions
What is Qualitative testing
Qualitative data is more descriptive than quantitative and is seen as more subjective
How do you measure material thinkness?
Vernier calliper or micrometers
For more speed you can use ‘go’ or ‘no go’ guages
What is a ‘go’ or ‘no go’ guage
Maximum and minimum sizes
The product should fit in maximum
should not fit in minimum
What are the tests for material toughness (destructive)?
Izod test or Charpy test
‘Notched’ material sample and a pendulum are used
What are the tests for material hardness (destructive)?
Vickers phyramid test
Triangular pyramid is pressed into material
hardness from force and size of depression
Rockwell test
Measures the indentation of a large weight and a small weight
Brinell test
Sphere is pressed into material
Hardness is found from force and size of depression
What are the tests for material tensile strength (destructive)?
Uses a tensometer
They are clamped at either end
One clamp moves away from the other
Plastic limit, yield and breaking point can be recorded
What is the test for thermal conductivity?
The rate at which heat moves through a material can be measured using thermometers or heat flow meters.
What is the test for electrical conductivity?
The rate at which heat travels through a material can show how good a material is at conducting electricity
What is ultrasonic testing?
- Testing for material defects
- Reciever placed at one end
- Rigid end stop at the other
- Sound is pulsed echos and is recorded
- If there is a defect the echo will sound different
What is X-Ray testing?
- testing for interior defects
- Used like a traditional medical X-Ray
What are some methods of carrying out qualitative tests
- Interviews
- Questionares
- Surveys
- Focous groups
- User observations
