Unit 4 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Crust
The outermost solid layer of earth
There are two types of crust- the Continental and the oceanic
Mantle
Is located between the core and the crust
Made of hot, slow-flowing, solid rock
Convection
Is the movement of matter that results from differences in density caused by variations in temperature
Core
extends from below the mantle to the center of earth
Made mostly of iron and some nickel
Lithosphere
The outermost , rigid layer of earth
It is made up of two parts- the crust and the rigid, upper part of the mantle
Also, it is divided into pieces called tectonic plates
Asthenosphere
a layer of weak or soft mantle that is made of rock that flows slowly
Mesosphere
the strong, lower part of the mantle
Rocks in the mesosphere flows more slowly than rocks in the asthenosphere does
What are Earth’s compositional layers?
These layers are called the crust, the mantle, and the core
Crust - made mainly of oxygen, silicone, and aluminum
Mantle - It contains more magnesium and less aluminum and silicone than the crust does
Core - It contains much less oxygen, silicone, aluminum, and magnesium than the mantle does.
What are Earth’s physical layers?
They are the lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core
Earth’s Core
Outer core - liquid layer
Inner core - solid layer
Earth’s Crust
Oceanic crust - has almost twice as much iron, calcium, and magnesium than the continental crust. So is denser than the continental crust because of the minerals
Continental crust is thicker than oceanic crust
