Unit 3 Lesson 2 Flashcards
Rock
Naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals that may also include organic matter
Weathering
The process by which wind, water, ice, and changes in temperature break down rock
Rock is broken into fragments called sediment
Erosion
The process by which sediment is moved from one place to another
Deposition
The process where sediment comes to rest or is dropped
Igneous Rock
Forms when magma or larva cools and hardens
Forms on or beneath Earth’s surface
Sedimentary Rock
Forms when minerals from solutions or sediment get pressed and cemented together
Metamorphic Rock
Forms when pressure, temperature, or chemical processes change existing rock
Rock Cycle
The series of processes in which rock changes from one type to another
Uplift
A type of vertical movement in earth’s crust where you have the rising of regions of the crust to higher elevations
Increases the rate of erosion of rock
Subsidence
A type of vertical movement where you have sinking of regions of the crust to lower elevations
Leads to the formation of basins where sediment is deposited
Rift Zone
An area where a set of deep cracks from
Common between tectonic plates that are pulling apart
