Unit 3 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Mineral
A naturally occurring usually inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure and chemical composition
Element
Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means
Atom
The building blocks of matter. All substances are made up of atoms
Molecule
Stable particles that are made up of strongly bonded atoms
Compound
A substance made up of molecules of 2 or more elements
Matter
Anything that has volume and mass
Volume
The amount of space an object takes up
Crystal
A solid, geometric form that results from a repeating pattern of atoms or molecules
How are minerals formed?
- As magma and larva cool
- by metamorphism
- from solutions
How are minerals classified?
Silicate minerals - contain silicon and oxygen. Make up most of earth’s crust
Nonsilicate minerals - do not contain the silicate tetrahedron
Classes of nonsilicate minerals
Streak
The color of the powdered form of a mineral
Luster
The way a surface reflects light
Cleavage
The tendency of a mineral to split along specific planes of weakness to form smooth, flat surfaces
