Unit 3 Lesson 3 Flashcards
Rock
A combination of one or more minerals or organic matter
Composition of rock
The makeup of rock
Determined by the minerals and organic matter a rock contains
Texture of rock
Determined by the size, shape, and positions of the grains that make up a rock
The texture of a rock may give clues as to how @nd where it was fo4med
What are 2 kinds of igneous rock?
Intrusive igneous rock - forms when magma does not reach earth’s surface. Generally has a coarse-grained texture. Examples: granite and diorite
Extrusive igneous rock - forms when lava erupts onto earth’s surface. Lava cools quickly so has a fine - grained texture. Examples: obsidian and basalt
What are 3 types of sedimentary rock?
Clastic Sedimentary Rock - forms when sediments are buried and cemented together by calcite or quartz
Chemical Sedimentary Rock - forms when water evaporates and the minerals on the water precipitate out of solution and crystallize. Example halite (rock salt)
Organic Sedimentary Rock - forms from the remains of fossils. Examples coal and limestone
What are 2 types of metamorphic rock?
Foliated metamorphic rock - forms when pressure causes the mineral grains in a rock to realign to form parallel bands. Examples: slate, phyllite, schist and gneiss
Nonfoliated metamorphic rock - do not have mineral grains aligned in parallel bands. Usually made of 1 or just a few minerals. Examples: marble and quartzite
