faithless elector
electors in the electoral college that vote for someone other than whom they pledged
executive order
like a law but doesn’t go through congress, carried out by president, more often used when quick action is needed
executive agreement
like a treaty but doesn’t need to be signed by Senate, politically binding agreement between two powers, don’t happen often bc can be seen as abuse of power
pocket veto
technicality, congress adjourns, president has had law for less than nine days, so bill dies
line-item veto
OBSOLETE, tried and ruled unconstitutional, gov could veto parts of bill they disagree with, governers still can but president can’t
amnesty
a general pardon for offenses, especially political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction
commutation
reducing or lessening a sentence or punishment resulting from a criminal conviction
bureaucracy
An administrative group of nonelected officials charged with implementing policies created by the other branches of government

honeymoon phase
first 100 days of pres being elected, approval ratings are highest, haven’t done anything so haven’t pissed anybody off, best time to implement policy
lame duck
presidents in 2nd half of 2nd term, tend to not do much since they know they’ll be done
balancing the ticket
pres candidate tries to find VP that balances out their weaknesses (ex hardcore rep P, so more moderate VP), want to maintain ideological balance
NSC
national security council, give advice on potential threats
