Unit 3 Topic 4 ✓ Flashcards
Organic chemistry: Pharmaceuticals
What are Pharmaceuticals?
Pharmaceuticals are drugs that are used as medicines because they have beneficical effects
What is a Drug?
A drug is a substance that alters a biochemical process in the body
What are medicines made up of? (3)
Medicines are made up of the drug (active ingredient), fillers to bulk out tablets and lactose to make them easier to take by mouth
What is an Agonist drug?
(Mimic)
An agonist drug is a drug that binds to a receptor and triggers a similiar effect to the molecule that would naturally bind. This stimulates a similiar response, the drug is mimicing the natural active compound causing the same effect
What is an Antagonist drug?
(Block)
An antagonist drug is a drug that binds to the receptor but doesn’t cause an effect. This blocks the active site and prevents the natural active compound from binding, so no natural response can take place
What is an Enzyme?
An enzyme is a biological catalyst, they allow reactions to proceed in cells
What is an Enzyme inhibitor?
An enzyme inhibitor is a compound that binds to enymes affecting their ability to catalyase a reaction
What is a Competitive enzyme inhibitor?
A competitive enzyme inhibitor is an inhibitor that binds to the active site of an enzyme, preventing the substrate from binding and blocking the reaction from occuring
What is a Pharmacophore on a drug molecule?
A pharmacophore is a structural fragment on a drug molecule that interacts with the binding site of a receptor/enzyme
