Unit 3 Topic 2 Flashcards
What is the aim in plant and animal breeding?
improve characteristics to help support sustainable food production
What is the reason for carrying out plant field trials in a range of environments?
to compare the performance of different cultivars or treatments and to evaluate GM crops
In designing field trials what has to be taken into account?
the selection of treatments, the number of replicated and the randomisation of treatments
Why must selection of treatments be considered?
to ensure fair comparisons
Why must there be an adequate number of replicates?
to take account or the variability within the sample
Why must treatments be randomised?
to eliminate bias when measuring treatment effects
What is inbreeding?
the mating or breeding of closely related individuals
What is there a loss of when inbreeding is performed for long periods of time?
heterozygosity
What does a loss of heterozygosity due to inbreeding result in?
plants or animals become homozygous for the trait being selected
What is the definition of inbreeding depression?
the accumulation of homozygous alleles can
