Unit 3 Test Flashcards
Whats an energy level?
period of an element. everything that starts with that number
whats the difference between the Bohr and Quantum Mechanical model of an atom?
The Bohr model has energy rings and levels whereas the Quantum Mechanical model has clouds of probability
electron clouds is a cloud of _______.
probability
how many electrons are on the 4th energy level for Tongueston (W)
32 (Count everything with a 4 in front of it thats before the element.)
s=
p=
sphere
dumbbell
how many sublevels are in the 3rd energy level
2 (s, p)
how many orbitals are in the 5th energy level
16 orbitals
sublevel
s, p, d, f
orbitals
2 electrons (elements)
Electron occupies the orbitals of the lowest energy first. bottom——->top (in order of energy)
The Aufbau
An atomic orbital may hold at most 2 electrons to occupy the same orbital, 2 electrons must have opposite spins; that is, the electron spins must be paired. (opposite spins)
The Pauli exclusion principle
When electrons occupy orbitals of equal energy, one electron enters each orbital until all the orbitals contain 1 electron with parallel spin. (They don’t share until they have to)
Hund’s rule
Write the electron configuration for an element using longhand and shorthand notation. Then find how many unpaired electrons it has.
Find an element and identify its category
How do u know which sub levels have higher energy levels?
Using Aufbau’s principle the farthest one down is the highest
