Cultural trait
Material and non material things that make up the culture
Cultural relativism
Not judging anyone’s beliefs and actions and trying to understand why they do that.
Ethnocentrism
Judging others culture’s based on your beliefs and culture.
Cultural landscape
Landscape that has been shaped by human involvement, that have expressions of regional identity.
Traditional Architecture
Buildings built by local people with local materials and resources as well as local techniques.
Postmodern Architecture
Buildings that go against the formality and lack of variety in modern architecture.
Linguistic
Language
Ethnic Neighborhood
A place where the majority residing are from the same ethnic background.
Ethnicity
Identity with a group of people who share a common identity with a specific homeland or hearth.
Land use patterns
The way land is utilized and organized in a specific area. (Sequent occupance is show)
Indigenous communities
A group of people who live within or are attached to geographically distinct traditional habitats.

Centripetal force
Forces that binds people or states together
Centrifugal Force
Forces that push people away from a place or create a division within a state or area.
Relocation
Moving people and their cultural traits from one place to another.
Diffusion
The spread of an idea or characteristics over time.
Hierarchical diffusion
When a cultural trend is spreading from one segment of society to another in a pattern
Stimulus diffusion
When a cultural trait or idea diffuses from its origin to another place, and is changed by the adoptees.
Contagious diffusion
An idea spreading from one person to another through contact.
Expansion
The process of spreading anything beyond their origin, leading to a broader influence and adoption in new areas.
Lingua franca
A common language that allows speakers to communicate without problems
Creolization
The process of social and cultural change occurring in societies experiencing rapid social flux.
Urbanization
The process of which cities and more urban areas grow and expand and the population increases.
Colonialism
Where a country has almost complete control over a country that they have settled in.
Imperialism
A policy that lets a country extend its power to take over a another country through colonization
Globalization
The increasing connection between different characteristics wound the world
Time Space Convergence
The decline in travel time to get from one place to another
Cultural convergence
When two or more cultures influence each other and become increasingly similar.
Cultural divergence
Where cultures become more and more different as time goes on.
Language family
A group of languages that come from the same base language.
Dialect
The distinct variation in the way a language is spoken.
Ethnic culture
A shared set of customs, beliefs, languages, traditions which distinguishes different cultures.
Cultural hearth
A center for innovation and invention, where new ideas are developed and then transmitted into other cultures
Gender roles
the societal norms and expectations that dictate how individuals should behave, dress, and conduct themselves based on their perceived gender.
Indo-European language family
a family of languages that includes branches like Celtic, Germanic, Italic, and Indo-Iranian, spoken across Europe and parts of Asia.
Toponyms
A name given to a place.
Universalizing religion
offer belief systems that are attractive to the universal population
Gravity model
explains how regions of human populated areas interact and are influenced by the variables of their populations and the distance between them
Ethnic religion
relate closely to culture, ethnic heritage, and to the physical geography of a particular place.
Acculturation
the adoption of certain cultural and social characteristics of one society by another society
Assimilation
the complete integration of someone of minority status into a dominant culture.
Multiculturalism
the acceptance of different cultures in a society and the active support of these cultural differences by both the majority and minority group members.
Folk Culture
Practices that are mostly done by smaller less dominant groups that increase uniqueness in that group
Place Utility
How much a person like a place and its characteristics
Push-Pull Factors
Factors that push and pull people towards, and away from a place
Space-Time Compression
The shortening of the time to get from one place to another
Popular Culture
A culture that is very dominant
Functional Region
A region that is centered around a node.
Perceptual Region
A region that is defined by how people believe it to be.
Ethnic Enclave
A group of ethnic peoples that live in one area
