Unit 3: Sources Of Wisdom And Authority Flashcards
What does the Old Testament contain?
- The Torah (five books of Moses).
- The teachings of the Prophets.
- The Writings: Psalms (poems), proverbs (wisdom).
What does the New Testament contain?
- The Gospels (which deal with the life, death and resurrection of Jesus).
- The Acts of the Apostles (history of the early Church).
- Letters from the disciples (St Paul, St Peter, St John, etc.)
Why is the Bible important to Catholics?
- It is the Word of God.
- It contains the life of Jesus.
- It was inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- By reading it we can grow closer to God.
Divergent Christian attitudes towards the Bible.
1) Creationists/Literalists - take the Bible literally.
2) Catholics - believe the Bible is made up of many different forms of literature (poetry, historical narrative - the life of Jesus, laws, prophecies, etc).
3) Liberal Protestants - some believe that the Bible is of human origin and not the direct word of God.
What is the Magisterium?
The pope and bishops together in communion with him who lead the Church.
Roles of the Magisterium
1) Interpret the Bible for modern day life.
2) Update the Catechism (official teachings of the Catholic Church).
3) Guide Catholics in how to deal with modern day ethical dilemmas (e.g. IVF, abortion, euthanasia).
4) Elect the new pope through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Divergent attitudes towards the Magisterium
1) Catholics recognise the Magisterium as having the authority of Jesus and the first disciples.
2) Protestants do not recognise the Magisterium as an authority as they are not members of the Catholic Church and have their own Church leaders.
3) Many other Christians reject the Magisterium believing that the Bible should be a Christian’s only guide in how to live a life.
What is the second Vatican council and what are the four documents?
1962-1965 in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. They wrote four documents all about the changes that would follow:
- Sacrosanctum Concilium
- Lumen Gentium
- Dei Verbum
- Gaudium et Spes
What changes were made in Sacrosanctum Councilium?
- Mass could be said in local language.
- Laity (non-priests could give out communion and read at mass).
What changes were made in Lumen Gentium?
- Non Christians and even atheists can achieve salvation.
- The people of the Church are as important as priests to carry on Jesus’ work.
What changes were made in Dei Verbum?
- Scripture (Bible and tradition are equally important, the Gospels are of particular importance, the Bible is the Word of God, written by humans and inspired by HS).
What changes were made in Gaudium et Spes?
- Important Catholics work with other Christian denominations for a better world.
- Important that we work with science and technology to understand God.
What does the term ‘The Church as the Body of Christ’ mean?
St Paul compares the people of the Church to a body, and just as a body is made up of different parts, the Church is made up of many different people and each person has an important job to do.
Why is the Church being the Body of Christ important?
- Reminds Christians that each member of the Church is unique and can contribute uniquely to the work of the Church.
- We are all called to do Jesus’ work (priests and deacons AND laity).
- It was taught by St Paul in the Bible.
Divergent attitudes towards the Church being the Body of Christ.
- Some people argue that the Church is divided (not all Christians agree with each other) so it should not be compared to a body.
- Some argue that the Church is made up of sinful people so should not compare themselves to Jesus.
- Many Christians don’t recognise the pope as the head of their Church so we are not all working together.
