unit 3 reading 20 Flashcards
alveoli
any of the tiny air-filled sacs of a mammalian lung
blood vessels
A tube through which the blood circulates in the body
capillaries
in a closed circulatory system
any of the small tin-walled blood vessels that permeate all tissues and organs and allow exchange of gases and other molecules between blood and body cells
circulation
the flow of blood through the heart and blood vessels, and the flow of lymph through the lymph vessels.
circulatory system
system responsible for moving oxygen, carbondioxide, hormones, nutrients, wastes, and other materials w/i the animal body
closed circulatory system
circulatory system in which the circulating fluid (blood) is confined to blood vessels and flows ina continuous circuit
heart
muscular pump that circulates blood or hemolymph throughout an animal
hemoglobin
oxygen-binding protein consisting of four polypeptide subunits (each containing an oxygen-binding heme group)
-the major oxygen carrier in mammalian blood
heme
small molecule that binds to each of the four polypeptides in hemoglobin
-contains an iron ion that can bind oxygen
lungs
any respiratory organ used for gas exchange b/w blood or hemolymph and air
open circulatory system
circulatory system in which the circulating fluid (hemolymph) is not confinded to blood vessels
partial pressure
pressure of one particular gas in a mixture of gases (contribution of that gas to the overall pressure)
pulmonary circuit
part of the circulatory system that carries oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs and returns oxygen-rich blood to the heart
(seperate from the res of the circ sys)
respiratory system
collection of cells tissues and organs responsible for gas exchange b/w an animal and its environment
red blood cells
hemoglobin-containing cell that circulates in the blood and delivers oxygen from the lungs to the tissues
