unit 3 reading 18 Flashcards
ATP Synthase
large membrane-bound protein comples that uses the potential energy stored in a proton gradient to couple proton transport and ATP synthesis
Chemiosmosis
energetic coupling mechanism whereby energy stored in an electrochemical proton gradient is used to drive an energy-requiring process such as ATP production
Electron transport chain (ETC)
any set of membrane-bound protein complexes and mobile electron carrier involved in a coordinated series of redox rxns (energy released from redox is used to AT protons from one side of membrane to other)
Mitochondrion
eukaryotic organelle that is surrounded by two membranes and is the site of aerobic respiration and ATP synthesis
mitochondrial matrix
central compartment of mitochondrion which is lined by the inner membrane (contains mitochondrial DNA, ribosomes, and enzymes for pyruvate processing and the citric acid cycle)
proton motive force
combined effect of a proton gradient and an electric potential gradient across a membrane (can drive protons across the membrane)
used by: prokaryotes, mitochondria, and chloroplasts to power ATP synthesis or other energy demanding processes via chemiosmosis
