unit 3 reading 19 Flashcards
allosteric regulation
regulation of an enzyme/proteins activity by binding of a regulatory molecule at a site that is distinct from the active site (often = in a change in the proteins shape that affects the function of the active site)
anabolic pathways
any set of chemical rxns that synthesizes large molecules from smaller ones (requires an input of energy)
catabolic pathways
any set of chemical rxns that breaks down large complex molecules into smaller ones (releasing energy)
competitive inhibition
inhibition of an enzymes ability to catalyze a chemical rxn via a nonreactant molecule that competes w/ the substratefor access to the active site
feedback inhibition
type of control in which high concentrations of the final product of a metabolic pathway inhibit one one of the enzymes early in the pathway (form of negative feedback)
metabolic pathway
a linked series of biochemical rxns that sequentially changes an initial substrate to form a final product (the product of one rxn is the substrate of the next rxn)
