Unit 3 list 1 Macromolecules LLC Flashcards
Macromolecule
A molecule containing a very large number of atoms
Organic
Relating to or derived from living matter
Monomer
A molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
Polymer
A substance that has molecular structure consisting chiefly or entirely of a large number of similar units bonded together
Carbohydrates
Any of a large group of organic compounds that includes sugars, starch, and cellulose
Lipids
Any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water.
Fatty acids
A carboxylic acid consisting of a hydrocarbon chain and a terminal carboxyl group
Protein
Any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that have large numbers of molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids, they are also an essential part of all living organisms
Amino acids
Molecules that combine to form proteins
Enzymes
A substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change
Nucleic acids
Large biomolecules that play essential roles in cells and viruses
Nucleotide
A compound consisting of a nucleoside linked to a phosphate group
Hormone
A regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids like blood or sap to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action
Steroids
A man made version of chemicals, known as hormones that are made naturally in the human body
