Unit 2 Chemistry LLC Flashcards
Atoms
The basic particles of the chemical elements.
Molecules
A group of two or more atoms held together by attractive forces known as chemical bonds.
Substance
A pure form of matter
Homogeneous Mixtures
A gaseous, liquid or solid mixture that has the same proportions of its components throughout a given sample
Heterogeneous Mixtures
A mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture
Chemical properties
A property of a substance relating to its chemical reactivity
Physical properties
A property (as color, hardness, boiling point) of matter
Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons
Elements
A basic part of a whole
Compounds
A substance made from two or more different elements that have been chemically joined
Reactants
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction
Products
An article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale
Hydrogen Bonds
A weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electromotive atom in the other
Covalent Bonds
A chemical bond formed when electrons are shared between two atoms.
Ionic Bonds
The complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms.
Cation
Ions that are positively charged.
Anion
An ion with negative charge, meaning it has more electrons than protons
Periodic Table- groups
A column in the periodic table of the chemical elements.
Periodic Table rows
Elements in the same row are in the same period
Valence Electrons
A single electron or one of two or more electrons in the outer shell of an atom
pH scale
Quantitative measure of the acidity or basicity of aqueous or other liquid solutions.
Acids
A chemical substance, usually a liquid, which contains hydrogen and can react with other substances to form salts
Bases
Any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the color of indicators
