- First Lay Nurses (1747) Took charge of hospital in Montreal for aged men & women, orphans, and fallen women
- Florence Nightingale paved away for nursing expertise to grow rapidly
-Victorian Order of Nurses (1897) nurses travelled to areas without medical services
-Canadian Nurse Association was the need for an organized nursing voice and patient care
-Spanish Flu Pandemic and WW2, 4000 nurses were enlisted which provided independent decision making opportunities for future leadership positions
What is vision statement?
Why the organization exists, how it is unique, and where it is going
What is mission?
How the organization will fulfill the vision & make a common course of action for the future
What is values?
Assisting with the achievement of the vision & mission (guidelines for decision making)

It is important to understand for guidance when deciding the right response to critical events, unforeseen challenges, common in complex systems
What is complex adaptive systems?
Factors beyond our control, & often beyond our knowledge, change the intended outcome

1st: lens of complexity
2nd: describes good enough visions

What is complexity science?
Innovative approaches that meet the needs of change while matching with vision, mission, and values
What is organizational culture?
Implicit knowledge or values & beliefs that reflect the norms & traditions of the organization
How is organizational culture related to leadership?
Organizational vision, mission, & values (which are components in leadership) is in culture
How is cultural change related to leadership?
Cultural change can support patient care and leaders play a strong role in inspiring change
What is empowering behaviours?
Raising others’ awareness of self power and self ability
What are some examples of empower behaviours can leaders use in healthcare environment?
-Enhancing the meaningfulness of work
(emphasize how nurse work is important and values)
