Hypertonic
D10W-10% dextrose in water is what type of fluid?
Hypertonic
What should we know about D5W?
It is considered isotonic in the bag– the problem is, once administered into the bloodstream, the dextrose metabolizes quickly leaving only the water which is a hypotonic fluid– use with caution
What should we know about NS?
It is used when there are issues with hypovolemia, resuscitation, shock, burn injuries, diabetic ketoacidosis, metabolic alkalosis, hypercalcemia, and mild NA+ deficits.
This is the ONLY solution that can be given with blood and blood products
What should we know about LR?
Contains sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride- electrolytes– used in tx of hypovolemia, burns, fluid loss and ACUTE BLOOD LOSS– volume expander. Because it contains potassium, this fluid should not be used in patients with renal disability
True or false: Hypertonis solutions may be ordered for patients post op because they reduce the risk of edema, stabilize bp, and regulate urine output.
