Unit 3- Diffusion of molecules Flashcards
Describe the arrangement of a liquid
- Irregular pattern
- Loosely packed
- Particles slide over each other
Describe the arrangement of a gas
- Irregular pattern
- Spread out
- Move freely and randomly
What happens when volume increases?
As volume increases,pressure decreases
What happens when volume decreases?
As volume decreases,pressure increases
What does high concentration mean?
Lots of something in a certain area
What factors affect rate of diffusion?
- Concentration gradient
- shape and size of molecule
- temperature
- Distance
- Surface area
What is the collision theory?
When suitable particles of the reactant hit each other, only a certain fraction of the collisions cause any noticeable or significant chemical change
Why does temperature affect rate of diffusion?
- Higher temperatures increase the energy
- Therefore increased movement of the molecules
- This means more collisions and successful collisions will occur.
Why does Surface area affect rate of diffusion?
If a higher surface area is higher then there is more places for the particles to collide.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is movement of anything from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Why does distance affect the rate of diffusion?
- The larger the distance the less collisions will occur
- The smaller the distance the more collisions will occur
Why does shape and size of the molecule affect the rate of diffusion?
The larger a molecule, the slower it will diffuse through a medium.
What is the equation for percentage error?
(Measure distance/percentage error) x100
