Unit 3 Concepts Flashcards
Osmotic Pressure
cytolysis
In hypotonic solution when Water moves from the solution to inside the cell and cell swells and bursts open.
Plasmolysis
In Hypertonic Solution when Water moves from inside the cell into the solution: Cell shrinks
Dynamic Equilibrium
In Isotonic Solution when Water moves equally in both directions and the cell remains the same size!
What type of solution are in these cells? See Image

Turgor Pressure
Bacteria and plants have cell walls that prevent them from over-expanding. In plants the pressure exerted on the cell wall is called turgor pressure.
What keeps animal cells isotonic?
The kidneys by removing excess salt and water.
What do cell membranes do?
Provide Protection
Control what enters and exits to create homeostasis
What is a lipid bilayer?
two layers of phospholipids
In the fluid mosaic model what is constantly moving in the cell membrane?
phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, etc. are constantly moving in the cell membrane
Turgor Pressure
pressure exerted on the cell wall
