Unit 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
What does abiotic mean?
non-living - water, dirt, rocks and the sun.
What does biotic mean?
Living - animals, plants, fungus, bugs.
What is population in an ecosystem?
Population = all the members of a single species that live in one place
What is a community in an ecosystem?
Community = All the plant and animal populations of a given area
What is a biome?
Biome = large areas with certain climates, plants and animals (eg. forest)
What is an ecosystem?
Ecosystem = living community and physical (nonliving) environment functioning together is an interdependent, self-sufficient, and relatively stable system.
*The ecosystem is the structural and functional unit studied in ecology.
Define ecology
Study of the ecosystem
What is a habitat
the place where an animal or plant lives and grows
What is a niche?
the role that a species plays in its environment
What is trophic level?
Describes how energy flows through an ecosystem
What is an autotroph?
(producers) capture energy and convert to “food”; plants or algae
What is a heterotrophs?
(consumers) - must eat things for energy (animals)
What is a producer?
Something that captures energy and coverts it to food aka plants
What is a consumer
Anything that cannot make their own energy and eats something else … i.e. bears, humans, deer 🦈
What is a decomposer?
break down dead or decaying plants and animals and return nutrient to ecosystem
What is a herbivores?
only eat producers (plants)
- aka deer 🦕 🦒
Carnivore
eat any type of consumer - Meat eater - 🐊🐆
omnivores
Both plant and meat 🐕 🐶 🐻🦊🦇
eat both producers and consumers
detritivores
An organism that feeds on dead or decomposing organic matter - vulture, mosquito, flies, bettle
Biomass
amount of living material at each trophic level
Species
a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
