unit 3 cancer Flashcards
what is cancer caused by
-a build up of mutations in a single cell
-when cells reproduce, they can only copy what is already there
can you inherit cancer
no but you can inherit a higher risk and mutations
what are the parts of the cell cycle
mitosis - when cells divid
interphase - when the cell is doing normal activities or growing larger to split
how is cancerous cells different from normal cells
-they divid rapidly and produce a lot more cells
-they stop doing their original job and decrease function in that area in the body
-their interphase is shorter and they no longer respond to normal signals of growth
what are the 2 types of tumours
benign and malignant
describe a benign tumour
-usually grows in one place and doesn’t invade other tissues
-cell growth can put physical pressure on organs making them life threatening
-treatment = surgery,medication,radiation
describe a malignant tumour
-cells spread through blood stream and get lodged in other organs
-divid more rapidly and live longer, disrupting more tissue
-often starts as a benign tumour
-treatment = surgery where possible, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy
