unit 1 Heart dieases Flashcards
heart disease, also known as..
cardiovascular disease or CVD
cardiovascular disease as a general term for conditions affecting the..
heart or blood vessels
what is atherosclerosis?
when fat and cholesterol builds up called a plaque inside the wall of an artery which narrows the lumen diameter and increases blood pressure because it is harder to get through which restricts blood flow to organs
what is a thrombosis and when does it occur
occurs when blood clots blocking veins or arteries, this can happen when a plaque in the wall of an artery busts so the body tries to stop the plaque from getting in the blood but blocks it more
other word for a plaque
atheroma
what is embolus
sometimes part of a thrombus brakes off and starts to move around the body which can get stuck in a smaller blood vessel,getting stuck and blocking the blood flow which can cause heart attacks and other major problems
what is coronary heart disease
when the coronary arteries which are supplied with oxygen and nutrients are blocked or interrupted causing increased strain on the heart which could cause heart attacks or failure and angina
what are the risk factors to most heart dieases
smoking, drinking alcohol, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, age and diabetes
Hearts attacks are also known as..
Myocardial Infarctions
Heart attacks are.. causing..
Serious medical emergencies where the blood supply to the heart is blocked, often by a blood clot, the cells beyond the blockage can’t respire as they need oxygen and glucose which leads to cell death and the heart muscles begin to die
The severity of a heart attack depends on..
Where the blockage is and how long it takes to get treatment
A stroke is when.. causing..
The blood supply to part the brain is blocked, brain damage or death
The blood not reaching the brain causing strokes are mostly caused by..
Blockages or haemorrhages (bleeding)
FAST represents.. and helps remember…
F=face -one side may droop or look weird
A=arm weakness or lack of control
S=speech difficulty
T=time to call an ambulance,
What a stroke can look like
Peripheral Arterial disease or PAD is caused by..
A build up of fatty deposits in the arteries in the peripheral system, restricting blood supply to the legs and sometimes arms
