Books given from God to humanity (e.g. The Decalogue)

Talks of Jewish people and their journey to the Promised Land.

Messages from God on how to live and what would happen

Poetry, songs. Human expressions on greatness and nature of God.

Tells of life of Jesus and his teachings.

Speaks of early Church communities and emergence of Church.

What inspired the Bible?
The Holy Spirit
Inspired (Catholic) view of Bible
Humans that wrote the Bible were inspired by God so it’s God’s message in human words.
There is truth in the Bible but it is not to be interpreted literally but read in light of the culture.
Advice of understanding it is provided by Magisterium and Holy Spirit.
Literal view of the Bible
Bible is true word for word and is inerrant.
Everyone must follow it.
Liberal view of Bible
Bible was written by humans therefore isn’t the word for word truth but can help people become closer to God. Some parts are outdated.
Importance of Bible
Offers advice and guidance for daily living.
Reveals what God is like.
Used to reflect on worship or used in worship (Mass).
Contains Jesus’ teachings.
Importance of Magisterium
Give advice on modern day issues. Write the CCC. Continue apostolic succession and tradition. Interpret the Bible. Inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Structure of the Magisterium
Pope then Cardinals then Bishops then Priests.
Ordinary Magisterium
Daily teaching of the Church through letters of the Church and is infallible.
Extraordinary Magisterium
Church councils or when Pope speaks with absolute authority and is infallible.

Sacrosanctum Concilium (The Sacred Liturgy)
Laity more involved.
Mass into vernacular.
Catholics receive both body and blood at the Eucharist.
Dei Verbum (The Bible)
The Bible is Word of God and is therefore important.
Focused more on how Church could use the Bible in teachings.
Catholics should use the Bible to learn more about Jesus.
Lumen Gentium (The Church)
Non-christians could be saved.
Church should work more equally together.
Importance on laity.
Gaudium et Spes (The Modern World)
Looked at how Church worked with science/technology.
Emphasised the need to treat all fairly and with dignity.
Church should branch and talk to all.
How is a Catholic brought into the Body of Christ?
Through baptism.
What brings together the Body of Christ?
The Eucharist as it brings the community together.
What does the Body of Christ do?
Christians continuing message of Jesus on earth.
Why is the Body of Christ important?
Stated in Bible and CCC.
Makes us apostles as we continue Jesus’ message.
Everyone has unique individual roles - laity in careers, clergy in serving God and religious through prayer.
Four Marks of the Church
One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic
Four Marks of the Church - One
United as One Catholic Church, not separated like all denominations.
United in sacraments and roles we play.
Four Marks of the Church - Holy
We are made holy by following Jesus’ examples and teachings of the Church. Examples of Saints and prayer can be used.

Church is universal because in every country everyone evangelises.
Faith is strengthened together.
Four Marks of the Church - Apostolic
Continues work of the Apostles as we preach (Apostolic tradition) and continues work of Pope (Succession).
3 reasons Mary is important
She is model of the Church.
She was a disciple of Jesus.
She was faithful and loving.
How is Mary model of the Church?
She was mother of Christ and stayed with him until death.
She lived a sinless life as the Immaculate Conception.
How was Mary a disciple of Jesus?
She was first to follow Christ and remained loyal to him.
How was Mary faithful and loving?
She always had faith in God and Christ.
How is Mary represented today?
Days dedicated to her.
Statues in chapels where people pray to her as an intercessor.
Places of pilgrimage where she has appeared.
Hymns and prayers attributed to her.
Teachings of Jesus
Show love to others (Love thy neighbour).
Forgive our neighbours (e.g. when he forgives the robber on the cross).
Serve those in need (e.g. when he cleaned the disciples feet).
Work for fairness and equality (Sheep and the Goats).
How does conscience help with decision making?
It is informed by God and is the centre of us as it allows us to make rational decisions. We use it to become good people.
How does natural law help with decision making?
Laws designed by God are shown in nature (e.g. procreation and protecting life).

Catholic belief about decision making
Importance of following conscience but must be informed by Church, Natural Law and Bible.
Other belief about decision making using Bible
All we need is the Bible to help us.
Laws not addressed in the Bible and Natural Law (abortion) can be addressed in a more modern way.
Humanist belief about decision making.
We must follow our conscience and the world we live in but this doesn’t come from God.
