Unit 3 Flashcards
What is Biotic Potential? What conditions must be met to achieve it?
Biotic potential is the potential growth of a population. Only occurs under ideal conditions with nothing limiting the population
What are the population dynamics, as well as the shape of the curves?
Population dynamics: Birth rates, death rates, immigration, emmigration
Curves:
-Exponential growth produces a J-shaped curve
-Logistic growth produces an S-shaped curve
How do you use CBR and CDR to calculate the % increase or decrease of a population?
Original value (CBR OR CDR) - new value (NEW CBR OF CDR) / original value (CBR OR CDR)
What are the characteristics of r- and K-selected species?
R = small, reproduce quickly, thrive in changing environment
K = Large, few offspring, lot of parental care, thrive in a stable environment
How do you convert written numbers to scientific notation?
Move the decimal point to the first real number value then put X 10 ^#, # being the amount of places the decimal moved over
EX) 1,000,000 —> 1x10^6
What are some of the characteristics of population in the Pre - Industrial stage (stage 1)?
a stable population, with high death rates, due to low standard of living, and high birth rates due to the need to compensate for deaths.
What are some of the characteristics of population in the Transition stage (stage 2)?
Falling death rate, but the birth rate remains high, leading to faster population growth
What are some of the characteristics of population in the Post - Industrial stage (stage 3)?
death rates are low and birth rates decrease, usually as a result of improved economic conditions, an increase in women’s status and education, and access to contraception
How do you calculate Doubling Time using the Rule of 70?
Td = 70/GR
What are some of the factors that control Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in a population?
Economic, societal, and cultural factors = limiting factors
If TFR is below replacement levels, how can a population still increase?
Immigration
What is Population Momentum, and what Demographic Transition phase does it take place in?
Population Momentum = The phase where countries experience the majority of the growth in population, causing them to struggle
-Occurs in transitional stage
Identify characteristics of undeveloped countries
Undeveloped Countries: High growth rate, high CDR, high CBR
Identify characteristics of developed countries
Developed Countries: Low growth rate, low CBR, low CDR
What is the Island Biogeography Theory?
Island Biogeography Theory = The larger and closer an island is to the mainland the higher the biodiversity it will have
