unit 3 Flashcards
anticyclone
high-pressure system, good and dry weather, air sinks and moves away from the center
cyclone
low-pressure system, wet and cloudy weather, air rises and moves towards center
what are the layers of the atmosphere?
troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere
troposphere
lowest layer, gets colder as altitude increases, weather occurs here
stratosphere
contains ozone layer, as altitude increases it gets hotter
mesosphere
meteor showers happen in this layer, as altitude increases it gets colder
thermosphere
auroras happen in this layer, as altitude increases it gets hotter
what is acid rain
precipitation with ph less than 5.0 (mostly made up of sulfuric acid and nitrogen oxide)
what elements are the gases made up of?
78% nitrogen 21% oxygen
conduction
heat transfer through direct contact
convection
heat transfer caused by up and down movement of gases and liquids
radiation
heat transfer through waves
cold front
when cold air slides underneath a warm air mass, thunderstorms
warm front
when warm air glides over a cold air mass, little precipitation
occluded fronts
when 3 air masses meet, light to heavy precipitation
stationary fronts
when a warm and a cold air mass meet but neither move, mild winds and light precipitation
what are the different air mass labels?
continental polar, continental tropical, maritime polar, maritime tropical
what are the trade winds?
winds blow east to west, 0-30 N/S, tropical climate
what are the westerlies?
winds blow west to east, 30-60 N/S, temperate climate
what are the easterlies?
winds blow east to west, 60-90 N/S, polar climate
whats the difference between tornadoes and hurricanes?
tornadoes - faster winds, narrow path of destruction, damaging winds, lasts minutes to hours, forms over land (collision of mT and cP air masses)
hurricanes - slower winds, wide path of destruction, damaging floods, lasts days to weeks, forms as low pressure systems over warm ocean water
what is the coriolis effect
air currents bending one way or another due to earth’s rotation (clockwise zpp
