unit 2 Flashcards
ellipse
elongated circle
aphelion (APART)
when earth is further away
perihelion
when the earth is closer
synchronized rotation
when something rotates at the same speed it revolves
keplers 1st law
planet moves in an elliptical orbit around the sun
keplers 2nd law
a planet moves fastest when it is close to the sun, slower when it is further away
keplers 3rd law
as a planets get farther away from the sun, it takes longer to revolve
nutation (TWO TES)
small wobble of earths tilt. caused by moon’ gravitational pull
precession
slow wobble of earth’s axis. caused by pull of the sun, moon and the other planets
barycenter
the point between two objects where they balance each other out
spring tides
moon, earth and sun are in a straight line, super tides
neap tides
the sun moon and earth are at a right angle, weaker tides
waxing
getting bigger
waning
getting smaller
what is earth’s magnetic field caused by?
movements in the earth’s iron-nickel core (magnetic iron core)
what does the magnetic field do?
repels solar winds, solar storms but when they come through it causes northern lights
what are the different types of waves?
radio, microwavs, infared, visible, UV, x-rays gamma
what are electromagnetic waves caused by?
fusion in the suns core
longitude
run north and south. MEASURE EAST AND WEST. affects timezones
latitude
run east and west, MEASURE NORTH AND SOUTH, affects climates
international date line
180 west
prime meridian
0 e/w
