Unit 3, 13 steps for investigating an outbreak Flashcards
step 1
preparation: prepare for everything you need. Like research tools, make sure the area is safe, etc.
step 2
identification: identify the outbreak, evaluate how it’ll affect the people, what resources are available to contain the outbreak, and how will the public react after news is out.
step 3
verification: verify the outbreak, eliminate all sources of error.
step 4
case definition: a set of criteria which identifies people as infected or not infected
step 5
systematic case finding: actively finding new cases, and recording information down to make data.
step 6
Analyze: analyze the data, pay attention on how this data will affect the people, place, and time.
step 7
develop hypotheses: make a hypothesis on where the disease is from, and how the disease will spread
step 8
analyzing hypotheses: analyze the correctness of your hypothesis. It HAS to include a control group.
step 9
refine hypotheses: based on your original hypotheses, correct your hypotheses and make a new one. (is anything wrong, are you missing anything, etc.)
step 10
combine lab reports/information about the outbreak with your hypothesis/findings.
step 11
prevention measures: immediately place prevention measures to contain the outbreak, prevent it from spreading further
step 12
Surveillance: keep an eye out on the outbreak, track new cases, and change the way you control the area as needed
step 13
report: report your findings
