Unit 2.3 metabolic rate Flashcards
What are the ways in which we can measure metabolic rate?
- Respirometer
- Oxygen probes
- Carbon dioxide probes
- Calerometers
Name each in order of lowest to highest metabolic rate birds, fish, reptiles, mammals, amphibians?
fish, reptiles/amphibians, birds/mammals
What is the structure of a bird’s heart like?
Birds have complete double circulatory systems, consisting of two atria, and two ventricles.
What is the structure of Amphibians and most reptiles hearts?
amphibians and most reptiles have an incomplete double circulatory system consisting of two atria and a single ventricle.
What is the structure of a Fish heart?
Fish have a single circulatory system and have a single atria and ventricle
What are the benefits of a complete double circulatory system?
Complete double circulatory systems
- enable higher metabolic rates to be maintained
- ensures there is no mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
- Oxygenated blood can be pumped out at higher pressures allowing for more efficient oxygen delivery to cells
