Why is it important to have resilience?

A

When you have resilience, you harness the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge
If you lack resilience, you might get stuck on problems or feel like a victim
It involves adapting positively to hardships, which often strengthens personal growth and enhances one’s ability to handle future difficulties with more confidence and flexibility

Q

What are the factors that influence resilience (personal experiences)?

A

Traumatic experiences can have a profound impact on resilience. While trauma can initially undermine our sense of safety and control, successfully navigating these experiences can also lead to post-traumatic growth and increased resilience
Positive life events can also boost resilience. Achievements, personal growth experiences, and overcoming challenges can build Understanding this cumulative effect is crucial for developing strategies to manage stress and maintain resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, enhancing our belief in our ability to handle future difficulties. These positive experiences create a reservoir of strength that we can draw upon during tough times
The cumulative effects of multiple stressors can significantly impact resilience. While a single stressful event might be manageable, the accumulation of multiple stressors
The timing and life stages at which we encounter challenges also play a role in resilience development. Experiences during critical developmental periods, such as childhood or adolescence

Q

What are the factors that influence resilience (choice)?

A

Some children find it difficult to accept change. Some students will naturally have a harder time asking for help, and it’s part of their personality
Students who are accustomed to naturally performing well in school struggle to ask for help, as it’s new territory and can even feel like weakness
However, children often fail to recognise the depth of what they don’t know. This overestimation of one’s abilities is common, and can lead to headache on exams and assignments later in life.
This can because of feelings of:
Shame or fear of being stigmatised
Lack of knowledge about what they are struggling with
Feeling powerless
Fearing judgement or punishment
Refusing as a way to gain control
