What did Maslow theorise?
Suggested that humans have a hierarchy of needs, and until basic needs are met a human cannot focus on higher level needs like self actualisation
What is Maslow’s theory called?

What does self actualisation mean?
Where a person can discover and achieve their potential
State the 5 stages of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and what needs are within each stage
Physiological needs - basic needs like food, water, shelter, sleep/rest
Safety needs - security, money
Love and belonging needs - secure relationships and friendships
Esteem needs - confidence and higher self-esteem
Self actualisation - ability to reach and discover their full potential
What theory is Maslow’s theory similar to?
Piaget’s cognitive development theory, as they both use stages to describe progression
How does Maslow’s hierarchy of needs link to educational practice?
It’s essential to create environments that are comfortable and safe for children
Helping children feel like part of a group and cared for by adults comes before learning
Adults need to try and develop positive self esteem in children
What are some criticisms of Maslow’s theory?
Research has not always backed up his ideas
It doesn’t explain how some adults who have not had their love and belonging needs met can still thrive

focuses on feelings, attitudes and the welfare of the child
