What did Bowlby theorise?
Emphasises the importance of early childhood relationships in forming healthy emotional and social bonds
Children have an innate biological program to form emotional attachments
What is Bowlby’s theory called?
Attachment theory
What is the critical period?
First few years of life are critical for securing bonds and attachments with primary caregivers
What is maternal deprivation?
Being apart from mother from the first 2.5 years of life, can cause antisocial behaviours, attachment issues, anxiety and other mental health problems/issues
What theorists is Bowlby similar to?
Similar to Bandura and Vygotsky, as they all emphasise the critical role of social interactions and relationships in shaping development
How does Bowlby’s theory link to educational practice?
Making sure there are key workers for a set mount of children to secure emotional bonds and attachments
What is a criticism of Bowlby’s attachment theory?
Overly focused on the mother-child relationship and doesn’t account for the role of other caregivers or social factors in attachment
