Unit 2-Recap And Molecular Structure Flashcards
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is a group of chemicals which have similar chemical properties and can be represented by a general formula.
What is a functional group?
a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound.
What is meant by a saturated compound?
Contain only C-C single bonds
What is meant by an unsaturated compound?
Contain at least one C=C double bond
What are isomers?
Isomers are molecules with the same chemical formula but different structural formula.
What is an addition reaction?
C=C double bond is partially broken when the reactant molecule attacks and adds on across it.
What is a condensation reaction?
Molecules join together and a small molecule is removed (usually water)
What is hydrolysis?
Water molecules break apart a molecules (opposite of condensation)
What are some physical properties?
melting point, boiling point, viscosity, colour, smell
What are some chemical properties?
Flammability, heat of combustion, reactivity with water, pH
This is the skeletal formula for which chemical?
Butane
